Hey all! Shopgirls is helping out a friend by promoting this amazing event coming up, Heart for the Holidays on December 4th. The Heart House Hospice is trying to raise $20,000 to directly reach out to families affected by terminal illness and give them food and gifts to be able to enjoy what might be the last holiday season they share together. Shopgirls has been keeping this secret for months, but it’s time to share! We have been working with Second Clothing to re-brand Yoga Jeans, and came up with a fabulous concept – Yoga Jeans: denim for real women, jeans that give women what they really deserve: to feel good, real good. It’s inspired by all the amazing customers who’ve experienced the joy of trying on these beautiful but comfy pants! So here’s to you! … Avril Loreti’s modern chic accessories!

Toronto-based Avril Loreti creates modern decor items and accessories that “add that extra little bit of creative thought and design sensibility to your lifestyle.” Yes they do, and WE LOVE THEM. We sat down for five minutes to chat with Shopgirls Artist Circle member and headwear designer Lori-Anne Krausewitz, whose LaKrause Headwear line has taken off since its inception 2 years ago.

What kinds of materials do you use?
I use feathers, netting, interesting fabrics, vintage hats, vintage jewellery and found objects.

What makes your work unique?
All of my pieces are one of a kind and handmade by me! I don’t use pre-fab materials and I rework and redesign old vintage hats and make them into something new and unique.

Who or what are your influences?
My grandmother, who had impeccable style and always wore fabulous hats and headpieces.


What is your current creative obsession?
Finding new and unique materials to make into headpieces.

Who’s your favourite Canadian artist or designer?
I love Susie Love Jewellery!

Shopgirls is so thrilled about this Thursday’s event, a vernissage for Tennille Will, one of our artist circle members.

Join us for art, entertainment and light refreshments on the evening of November 5th to celebrate the opening of SUGAR FREE 2009.

Since her diagnosis of Type 1 diabetes in 2006, Tennille Will has created the SUGAR FREE painting series as a way to give back to the Diabetes Education Centre at the Toronto Western Hospital. The evening will feature wonderful silent auction opportunities, light refreshments, and musical entertainment by Emily Dempster and Laura Palumbo.

DATE: November 5th, 2009
TIME: 7pm – 11pm
COST: admission is PWYC, with all proceeds going to the D.E.C.
Exhibition runs from November 5th-30th, 2009
