Parkdale’s Vendor Market

Our neighbors Made You Look have been putting on a market each Saturday outside the shop. They’ve invited all the Parkdalians to join in and bring their wares. So far the event has been a great success and tonnes of fun. Sweetspot.ca even listed it in their top 5 things to do in Toronto this past weekend. So here’s a big THANK YOU to Sarah for putting it all on and a big INVITE for you all to come check it out!!

Mini Interview with Yvonne of Torched Studios

What kinds of materials do you use?
I use enamel, which is very finely ground glass.  I use only lead free enamel.  I fire it onto a metal base, which is usually copper, at around 1500 degrees in a kiln.  Enamelling can also be done on silver or gold.  The silver has to be fine silver. If you use sterling silver you must first do something called depletion gilding, which is heating the silver until the fine silver rises to the surface.
What makes your work unique?
I create my own custom colours by layering several different shades of enamel and overfiring to blend them.  You will never see enamel colours straight from the container as vibrant or intense as the ones I make.

Who or what are your influences?
The blue of the ocean, the red of fire, the irridescence of a peacock’s tail.  It’s hard to find something more inspirational than nature itself.  I also travel a lot and I love seeing the way that colour is used in different ways in different countries.
What is your current creative obsession?
I’m still trying to achieve a hot fuschia pink.  This is very hard to do with enamels.  I’m also starting on doing larger scale enamel artwork.   My dream is to someday do an entire wall-sized enamel mosaic.
Who is your favourite Canadian artist or designer?
The Sadies are my favourite Canadian artists ;)   I was also recently admiring metalsmith Kye-Yeon Son’s work in the latest Studio magazine.  Her work is amazing!

Check out Yvonne’s work on her website or read her blog!

This Cake has music, too!

You’ve been reading and hearing from me for months about how wonderful Sarah Selecky‘s book, This Cake is For the Party is. Since I started posting about the book last July, Sarah was a finalist for the Gillers, a CBC Bookie winner for Best New Writer, and now, is shortlisted in the Best New Book (Canada and Caribbean) for the Commonwealth Writer’s Prize!

Well, smarty-pants Sarah has created a new dimension of enjoyment for her lovely book of stories: an iTunes playlist of songs that correspond in some way to the theme of each story! Clicking the link will open your iTunes, and you can purchase or sample each of the songs and try to guess why she picked them!

How’d They Do That? …Yoga Jeans!

If you’ve been into Shopgirls you know we LOVE the Yoga Jeans. Not only are they the most comfortable jeans ever, they tend to fit amazingly on 99% of women who try them on. The rise is high enough to avoid the perilous muffin top and the spandex content is such that you can truly buy them to fit your waist while they curve around your hips beautifully. The real kicker though, is the stretch memory. These jeans don’t bag out in the knees or sag in the bum after a days wear.

Mode Montreal recently featured designer Eric Wazana discussing the research and development that went into designing the jeans. You can click the image below to be taken the the video and see what the fuss is about.  And don’t forget, Shopgirls has the largest selection of Yoga Jeans in Canada so come on in to try on a pair for yourself!

A2B By Jade Sullivan-Vallentyne

Jade may have just taken off for 5 months in Peru but she left us with quite a bit to remember her by. Clean staff room and re-organized basement aside, check out her new online portfolio!

The A2B collection was Jade’s graduating thesis from Ryerson University’s Fashion Design program. The sustainably minded collection was inspired by the 20-something traveling man and made using organic & reclaimed fabric. A few pieces are actually constructed from re-purposed tents!

The video was done by the uber talented Chris Wardle and photographed by Pawel Tosiek. More shout-outs to Samantha Compton who did the hair and makeup for the shoot.
