The Japanese Paper Place (JPP)

Located at 78 Brock Avenue, The Japanese Paper Place is a warehouse that welcomes artists and conservators alike. Recently the JPP teamed up with OCADU‘s second year lithography students (formerly known as OCAD). They gave the OCADU students paper to work with, and taught them about the paper making process.

By Carlie Woodworth

The JPP will be hosting an exhibit of the second year students work, displaying their final lithography projects. The student’s prints will be shown at the JPP on December 7th for about a month, be sure to go check it out!

Now, you ask, what exactly is lithography?

Lithography is a type of  printmaking with an OLD process. OCAD(U) is one of the few universities left that still teaches this process. The process involves drawing with grease on a limestone (which is an extremely rare stone), and then using nitric acid to burn into it. Lithography is based on the principle that grease and water repel each other. These students are assigned a giant rock at the beginning of the semester, told to name it, and away they went.

Visit The Japanese Paper Place’s website if you want to know more!

LG Fashion Week: Melissa Nepton

Melissa Nepton’s Spring 2012 show was a great success!

As a backstage helping hand, dressing the models was a sight of salmon tints, whites, blacks, an overall line of effortless-looking future spring looks.

Here are a few highlights of the show:

Then after the show, approximately 30 of you where here to help celebrate Melissa Nepton at Shopgirls, we had a great time!

And in case you haven’t had a chance yet to peek at LG’s other designers collections, I have a few favorites of my own:

Look up the FDCC’s Facebook page for where the pictures came from, and be sure to peruse the designers on LG Fashion Week’s website!

New to Shopgirls…. Stephanie

The newest arrival to Shopgirls is myself,
Stephanie Rotz!

Today is my first day here at the boutique as an intern. Coming from my second year at Ryerson University as a Fashion Communication student, I couldn’t be more excited to be apart of this truly Canadian store. Seeing as how I pride myself on being a true Canadian I have either had a hockey stick, Timmy’s cup, or some maple syrup in my hand. Now, instead I’ll be here, among truly inspiring Canadian works of design. My personal favorite items so far are the extremely light and bright necklaces by Montreal designer, Norwegian Wood, featured at the front of the store. These necklaces in my opinion are a perfect dose of the colour blocking trend.

As a Toronto fashion student, the wait for LG Fashion Week is over. I can’t wait for Melissa Nepton’s show! This Thursday October 20th, you can catch me backstage helping out at the show, and then after back here at Shopgirls for the preview of her Spring 2012 line. Be sure to come by and check out her current fall line as well, that will be for sale. Don’t miss the FDCC calendar of the events for this week’s shows.

Keep your eye out for me!
Stephanie
