Green Canadian Fashion
Recently there has been lots of talk at the shop regarding the green fashion movement. After a quick inventory we realized that most of our designers fall under some sort of eco-criteria. For some it’s the fabrics or the process and for others it’s simply by sourcing locally and producing in Canada. So with a stroke of incredibly good timing one of our favorite stylists popped in looking for pieces to feature in an upcoming Marilyn Denis Show feature on green fashion.
Check out the outfit second to the left. The Chartreuse Biker jacket by Stacey Zhang is matched with a tank by The Paddock (a collection by Carrie Hayes exclusive to Shopgirls!) They don’t talk about the accessories too much in the segment but note the orange and grey necklace by Ashen Drift made from upcycled tshirts, the bag by Anna Zigowski, the silver necklace by Norwegian Wood, and the blue crochet earrings by This Ilk.
So click the photo to watch the segment & then come in and try it all on!!
New Arrivals
Spring has sprung at Shopgirls with new stock arriving DAILY. Just today we received shipments from The Paddock, Bodybag by Jude, and Melissa Nepton. We have amazing new art on the walls from Toronto Illustrator Joel Tellier and too many new accessory designers to name. Shop favorites Stacey Zhang and Eve Gravel have started to arrive, with more expected in the coming weeks.

But the one were most excited about today is Rowenta. Sitting at 5.5 feet tall with three different settings our new industrial steamer has us jumping for joy!

Farewell Toby with your broken arm and tiny tank, you will not be missed.

New Baby, New Body: What I’m wearing these days…
I gave birth to my second daughter Zara on Mother’s Day and I have to admit, I have not had much time to get my pre-baby body back over the summer. I am reluctant to buy clothing that is one size up and yet I can barely squeeze into what’s already in my closet except for a few pieces that are getting me through this in-between stage.

By far, the number one item all new moms MUST HAVE is a pair of Yoga Jeans. I still have 15 luscious pounds to shed and yet my Yoga Jeans still fit! Admittedly, I have to shimmy into them a bit, but with a high rise option, the jeans hold in my mommy muffin nicely. And what’s great is that the jeans will still fit once I lose the baby weight!

Tunics and drapey pieces are a no-brainer but if you’re not a fan of billowing tops and if you’re still self-conscious of your mid-section, scarves can be an inexpensive yet stylish solution. C’est Moi has a fab selection of textured scarves starting at $20. —>

Layers! If you’ve got fitted pieces that you love, but feel they are a bit too revealing, a simple long sweater or vest is a great way to mask those extra bits without looking like you are trying to. Luckily layering is very fashionable, no one needs to know that you are sporting an asymmetrical vest (like this one from Stacey Zhang) to hide your baby lumps!
I’ve learned to work with my wardrobe by simply adding a few key pieces and accessories which will serve me beyond the loss of the baby weight. So many of these pieces can be found right here at Shopgirls… and of course, we still have THE best selection of Yoga Jeans in Canada!
So, if you’re a new mom with nothing to wear, drop into the shop, we’d be happy to get you through this transitional stage in style!
Wendy Woods: Tips on Layering for Spring

So many of my clients struggle with what to wear to keep warm on Spring days and Summer nights. Each of these versatile pieces can be used to create different outfits day after day. I see the blush colored Faren vest just as easily worn over a long sleeve jersey dress as with a tank top and jeans. The purple Stacey Zhang piece is an ultra-feminine alternative to a cardigan when worn open or can be a beautiful shirt when tied closed. The gray Stacey Zhang vest is an elegant way to create a sleeve for a summer evening dress or can be worn as a vest over any shirt. These stylish layering pieces are a perfect way to keep warm and update your wardrobe for Spring 2010!

What’s in my closet…
I first came across Stacey Zhang while perusing Quebec’s Sensation Mode newsletter last fall. I fell in love with an adorable asymmetrical plaid cocktail dress featured on the centre of the page. All I could think was, “Please let this be a Canadian design because I want this designer in my shop!” My prayers were answered! Not only was this creation from a Montreal designer, but her entire collection had the same impact! I simply wanted one of each style in every colour! Needless to say, my wardrobe has grown steadily since Stacey became part of Shopgirls.
The “I cannot live without” saga continues with Stacey’s new 2010 Spring collection. As always, this Montreal designer never ceases to amaze and delight with her flirty, feminine yet original designs. Her ability to create interesting yet wearable pieces truly distinguishes Stacey’s collection. We are proud to be one of the few Toronto boutiques to feature her work. To my husband’s dismay, my closet will continue to grow as Stacey’s new spring pieces begin to arrive in-store in early March and miraculously end up in my wardrobe. (Looks like I’ll also need to stock up on hangers for my closet!)

We Freakin’ Love…
… Ruffles! They’re not just for pirates anymore!
I personally am a huge fan of this ultra feminine yet classic detail that gives any outfit an added touch of flair. Some may feel they’re over-the-top but I beg to differ, especially when you see the new Stacey Zhang Ruffle Sweater. This piece not only flatters all shapes and sizes, but the boiled wool keeps you warm and cozy all winter long. (Available in Lilac or Black, $190).
Along this same wavy line, I also love Montreal’s Atelier Mouvement scarves. Say goodbye to boring with one of these unique pieces of art. Constructed with dozens of individual strips of fabric sewn together, these little gems create such a glamorous impact on their own. Paired with a simple black turtleneck or even your winter coat, you can bring drama to any outfit in your closet AND they can double up as a shawl for any cocktail dress, keeping you warm and stylish all night long. (Available in many colours, and starting at $60).
